In just over five years since production started Kia Motors Manufacturing Slovakia has built its 1,000,000th car - a white, diesel-engined cee'd SW.
Immediately handed over to a Slovakian children's charity - the Red Nose Clowndoctors - the cee'd is also the 600,000th version of the Zilina factory's first car. The factory now also produces Sportage and Venga.
"Kia Motors Slovakia has achieved an important milestone in its history with the production of the millionth car. We decided to donate it to an organisation which will bring pleasure to children during their stay in hospitals," said Eek-Hee Lee, President and CEO of Kia Motors Slovakia.
Kia Motors Slovakia recorded a 10% year-on-year increase in car production and a 12% year-on-year increase in engine production during 2011, when it produced more than 252,000 cars and 359,000 engines. The factory plans to produce around 285,000 cars this year.
Sportage production in 2011 topped 101,000 units, representing 40% of the overall production. A total of 103,000 cee'd models were produced, or 41% of the total production and 11,000 Kia Venga models. The remainder of 2011 production, 36,000 units, were Hyundai ix35 manufactured up to June 2011.
Kia Motors Slovakia launched a third shift this year and increased the number of employees to 3,900. The company is currently preparing for production of the second generation of the cee'd model during the second quarter.

Last weekend saw WEST END GARAGE celebrating Kia’s 20th UK anniversary. It has been 20 years since the manufacturer’s first cars went on sale in the UK – less than a fortnight after the All New Picanto, went on sale at the dealership. We have witnessed the brand go from strength to strength. Damian Dunne, Dealer Principal at West End Garage, says: “Out of all the car manufacturers on the roads today, Kia is the most exciting to watch. Kia is making its cars more attractive to consumers; fabulous build quality, universal appeal, great environmental credentials, excellent value for money – all of these factors are important to our customers. As a result of this, new people are being recommended and drawn to our dealership. They walk through our doors are obviously very impressed with Kia range.”Local motorists are especially embracing the new Kia’s, their favourite being the stunning New Sportage. Kia’s 20th year in the UK is a busy one for new models and has already seen the launch of new Picanto. Later this year, we see the launch of the all new Rio and the brand new Kia Optima sport saloon.Kia’s progressBack in 1991 the Kia Pride was the only Kia model on sale in the UK and the small hatchback went on to find 1,786 British homes in its debut year. Since then the firm has changed beyond all recognition and grown at an extraordinary rate to become a major global brand. In 2010 Kia recorded its best ever year in the UK with 56,114 vehicles sold – a feat matched at an international level as Kia sold in excess of 2 million vehicles worldwide for the first time. It is now the fastest growing car manufacturer in the world.Early models were renowned for offering great value for money and brought many customers to the brand. Recent models such as the European designed and manufactured Ceed, along with Kia’s industry-leading 7 year warranty, have built and under pinned an enviable reputation for quality and reliability. The appointment of Peter Schreyer ( Ex designer for Audi) as Chief Design Officer in 2006 coincided with a major shift in direction for the brand to put exciting design at the heart of all its new products and to appeal first and foremost on desire at an emotional level. The popularity of stunning new models such as the funky Soul urban crossover, award winning Venga mini-MPV, superb Sportage and all-new perky Picanto are testament to these efforts.Kia Motors Corporation is considerably older than its UK subsidiary having recently celebrated its own 67th anniversary on the 25th May 2011. From its origins of manufacturing bicycles in the 1950s Kia has now grown to be part of the 4th largest automotive group in the world and is present in over 170 countries. To arrange a test drive, call WEST END GARAGE Kia on 01483 797747 or visit the showroom at 133-141 Guildford Road (A322), West End, Surrey GU24 9LS.

To coincide with this week’s Walk to School Week, WEST END GARAGE is celebrating eleven years of Kia’s partnership with the local Walking Bus. In recognition of the annual awareness week, the Kia dealership is encouraging local schools and parents to think about forming a Walking Bus to help raise a greater understanding of road safety, and raising awareness of the environment and personal health.Since 2000, the Walking Bus campaign has created a total of 400 supported routes across the UK and has had a total of 15,000 children walking to school every day. Kia has been a proud supporter and WEST END GARAGE is keen for even more schools to get active on their way to and from school. Damian Dunne , the Dealer Principal of WEST END GARAGE Kia, is very enthusiastic about the scheme: “The Walking Bus is a great initiative we are only too happy to support it. Road congestion during the school run is a problem for all in the area and could be easily reduced if more children were encouraged and given the opportunity to be able to walk to school safely.”For any school wanting to start a Walking Bus, WEST END GARAGE Kia will provide high visibility jackets for the children. Mr Dunne added: “Safety is of the utmost importance and travelling to school by Walking Bus in shiny high-visibility jackets will keep our children safe on their journey as well as help them arrive at school alert and ready to learn.”To create a Walking Bus, parents or guardians – who have sought training from their local council – take turns to walk a group of children to and from their school. A ‘driver’ picks up children en route to school and leads the group, who are dressed in high visibility jackets, while a ‘conductor’ takes position at the rear of the ‘bus’ to ensure any stragglers are not left behind and the walking bus reaches school safely and on time.According to research in excess of 20% of all traffic in the mornings in and around Surrey and Berkshire is generated by the school run. Here, WEST END GARAGE Kia provides eleven great reasons to create a Walking Bus, and make every week, Walk to School Week:• Creating a Walking Bus helps your children learn about road safety• Over the academic year, a single car journeying a three-mile round trip will produce 234kg of carbon emissions• Walking helps concentration and memory, ensuring children are alert when they start the day•Currently one in ten school children in Britain are classified as obese• Regular walking helps towards a good night’s sleep• Walking just one mile a day would burn 100 calories, equating to 19,500 calories across the school year• The number of children travelling to school by car over the past 20 years has doubled • In the UK, the school run is responsible for more than two million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year• Driving the average school run for a year costs over £400• 4 out of 10 boys and 6 out of 10 girls do not do the recommended minimum of one hour a day of physical activity • Children should be able to walk half a mile extra each year they grow older e.g. a six year old should manage three miles with ease
For more information about how to set up a Walking Bus for your school, see www.walkingbus.org or www.kia.co.uk/walkingbus

WEST End Garage Kia is investing more than £500,000 into its dealership this winter, remodelling the current facility to add a seven-car showroom.
Remaining on its current site on the Guildford Road A322, the investment will update the premises, creating a brand new building to showcase its cars in a light and airy space, which will include a brand new second floor, opening up space for its customers to have a more comfortable browsing and buying experience.
West End Garage Kia’s staff will also be treated to new office space, along with a new service reception area, and will continue to offer complete aftersales, accident repair, MOT and a parts service for all makes and models.
As an established car dealership trading in Surrey for more than 42 years, Dealer Principal at West End Garages Kia, Damian Dunne, said: “Kia’s continued growth in the UK means a small showroom space just doesn't do the brand justice any more, so we are excited about the extension.
“We feel the new look site will ensure our customers continue to get the best service and cars on offer, but in a more refreshing and pleasing environment.”
Stressing that the dealership is still open for business, Damian added: “Our showroom might look a bit like a building site at the moment, but we want to assure the good people of Surrey and Berkshire the dealership is still trading, and very much open for business.”
With 0% finance on used cars; a new range from only £6,695; an industry leading fully transferab-le seven-year bumper-to-bumper warranty on the entire range, West End Garage Kia is perfectly positioned to offer quality cars at fantastic value to the residents of Woking and surrounding areas.
To view the Kia range or arrange a test drive, call West End Kia on 01483 797747 or drop in to the showroom on the Guildford Road (A322), West End, Surrey.

The presence of Proton cars in the motorsports arena continues with the recent announcement that Welch Motorsport will be running a Proton Persona in the Next Generation Touring Car spec series of the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
Welch Motorsport announced that it would be running a “booted version” of the GEN2 in the NGTC BTCC series – I’m assuming that they mean the Persona as the Persona shares the GEN2 name with the GEN2 hatchback in the UK.
Team Principal John Welch told btcc.net that the team would be taking delivery of the car today and will begin rebuilding it into a BTCC contender. His son 27 year old Daniel Welch will be driving it. As there will be time needed to convert it into NGTC spec, Welch Motorsport hopes they will be able to join the series in the second half of the season sometime in August, going up against other cars like the SEAT Leon Eurocup and the Vauxhall Vectra.
The Welch Motorsport Proton GEN2 will be running the standard NGTC spec “unbranded” turbo direct injection electronic throttle engine, which has 2.0 liters in displacement and makes over 300 horses, with the option for an overboost as well.
This standard unbranded engine offering exists to help reduce team engine budgets by more than half, somewhat like the Cosworth engine option in Formula One. Currently, teams will have the option to either run their own engines or use the NGTC engine up until 2013. Both FWD and RWD are allowed. Not everyone has opted for the unbranded engine – the Dynojet team’s Toyota Avensis uses a Toyota 2.0 liter 3ZR family engine that makes about 140 horses in stock form, equipped with a turbocharger to make over 300 horsepower.

Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (Daihatsu) announces that it has decided to cease sales of new vehicles in Europe as of January 31, 2013. However, Daihatsu will continue after-sales services, including supply of spare parts, for its vehicles beyond that date.Daihatsu currently sells new vehicles in approximately 10 countries. The decision to discontinue sales of new vehicles in Europe is the result of increasing development costs to comply with regulations in Europe, such as those related to CO2 emissions, and the appreciation of the yen against the Euro, which have had a negative impact on business results and made selling vehicles manufactured in Japan by Daihatsu no longer viable. It was made from the perspective of streamlining operations and focusing on specific areas of business.Notification to distributors and dealers in Europe regarding Daihatsu's decision to cease sales of new vehicles there began on January 13, 2011.Reference・No. of Daihatsu distributors in Europe: 10・No. of Daihatsu dealers in Europe: Approx.1,000 (including 400 exclusive dealers)・Sales of Daihatsu vehicles in Europe

The next-stage in the transformation of Kia’s range will be the launch of a new Rio supermini at next month’s Geneva motor show, a car much-needed to capture sales in the UK’s biggest market-segment.
Based on the same group platform as the Hyundai i20, the Rio is clothed in striking sheetmetal said to be the work of Kia’s European studio under design chief Peter Schreyer.
See the official pics of the new Kia Rio
Characterised by dominant headlamps, aggressive lower air vents and new ‘pinched’ treatment of the corporate grille, the Rio grows in the important dimensions of length, width and wheelbase, which boost interior space and on-road stability, while the roofline is slightly lower to improve the styling.
Inside is a new quality interior, designed in the company’s west coast US studio.
The full engine line-up will be revealed at Geneva, although it’s sure to feature engines new to the Rio since the current engine line-up isn’t EU5 compliant.
Read more on the new Kia Picanto at Geneva
It’s likely to centre on new group 1.4 and 1.6 petrol and diesels, also shared with Hyundai, and mated to five- and six-speed manual transmissions or a five-speed auto.
Also tipped for the Rio are a new 68bhp 1.1-litre four-cylinder diesel and a 1.2-litre soft-turbo petrol with direction injection.
At launch in September the five-door hatch will be the sole body variant; the three-door follows in December. The Rio three-door is also likely to be the launch model for Kia’s first-ever warm hatch, rumoured to arrive in mid-2012.

As unleaded petrol prices soar to a record average of 121.76p for a litre of unleaded petrol, Proton Cars is encouraging motorists to consider the Proton GEN-2 ecoLogic dual-fuel cars in an effort to help consumers learn about cost efficient alternatives.
Simon Park, General Manager Sales and Marketing for Proton Cars (UK) Ltd. Said: "With costs of fuel being driven up due to the particularly cold snap which has led to disruption of fuel deliveries around the country, coupled with the imminent increase in fuel duties and the higher VAT rate coming into play in the new year, now is the time for motorists to really consider alternative fuel options.
"Combining both the economical and ecological savings of LPG fuel (liquid petroleum gas), the Proton Gen-2 ecoLogic delivers the best of both worlds making it the ideal choice for cost and carbon conscious car owners.
"Priced from just £9,995 for a 1.6 hatchback, the Proton GEN-2 ecoLogic is significantly cheaper to drive off the forecourt without compromising on quality or reliability. What's more, it can be run at a fraction of the cost of either petrol or diesel."
Across the UK, LPG fuel costs just 69.4 pence a litre, compared to 125.73 pence a litre for diesel and 121.76 pence a litre for unleaded petrol - meaning that the Proton GEN-2 ecoLogic can offer great savings when filling up at the forecourt.
Simon continues: "According to the AA, the rise means motorists will have to pay an average of almost £6 more to fill an average tank compared with the start of the year.
"Because the GEN-2 ecoLogic is sold at the same price as its petrol counterpart, anyone buying a GEN-2 ecoLogic will instantly save between £1,500 and £2,000 - the standard price for installing an LPG conversion. As well as this saving - the equivalent of the average annual UK council tax and energy bills combined - the Proton GEN-2 ecoLogic also comes with a full 3 year/60,000 mile warranty and 3 years free RAC cover.
"This, combined with an alternative fuel discount of £10 on road tax and the standard new car benefit of a three-year MOT 'break' (saving £160 in test fees), means that Proton drivers can save their pennies."
With over 1,420 LPG filling stations in the UK, and in excess of one new station per week opening in 2010, LPG is fast becoming an interesting offer to motorists watching pennies or refusing to pay the high fuel prices for unleaded petrol or diesel.

After a countless number of Picanto spy shots, teaser images and even official shots revealing the stylish exterior design of the upcoming 2012 Kia Picanto, we are now getting a chance to see the car’s modern interior layout for the first time. As evident from the image, Picanto’s interior has been built from ground up and now seems to be more functional and eye-pleasing.As revealed earlier this week, there will be two body-styles and four-engines available once the new Picanto goes on sale worldwide. Korean-market Kia Picanto will be badged as Kia morning and will initially offer only one engine option; the 1.0L Kappa four-cylinder mill with an estimated output of 82 horsepower. The 1.0L Kappa engine will be mated to either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. Mated to the manual gearbox, the 2012 Picanto achieves 22 km/L and 19 km/L when coupled with automatic transmission.Positioned below Kia Rio, the all-new Picanto measures 3.595 mm long, 1.595 mm wide and 1.485 mm tall. It is build upon a minicar platform which has a 2.385 mm long wheelbase.According to a source close to Kia, the forth-coming Picanto has an exceptional level of standard safety and convenience features for the mini-car segment. There are six-airbags, ABS, ESP, Brake Assist System -BAS and Hill Start Assist Control available, as well as navigation system, panoramic sunroof and a large number of other infotainment systems. The Korean-market Picanto will be officially unveiled at the end of this month, with sales slated to commence shortly after its inaugural Korean premiere. The Euro-specs Picanto will make its official premiere at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show, where Kia will also display the 2012 Rio 5-door hatchback!
